Need to fight a parking ticket? Give Do Not Pay’s Robot Lawyer a call

A website which provides people with a quick and easy way to fight parking tickets and appeal for compensation for delayed flights has helped users save around 3 million in just five months.

The website Do Not Pay dubbed lawyer robot provides the consultancy and letter-writing services of a lawyer for free.

By entering details of your complaint you can find out if you ve got grounds for an appeal.

Do Not Pay was designed by Joshua Browder, a student at Stanford University in California. When he turned 18 and started driving he received some parking tickets he felt were issued unfairly, so he appealed to local councils.

Noting that the appeals process was similar across most councils, he created a program to help people generate legally sound documents simply by answering a few questions.

I noticed that there was a formulaic way of writing the appeals, and using my coding skills, I thought that it would be great to help a few friends appeal their tickets automatically using a website, he told BT.com.

The lawyer robot is a chat bot, which means it asks the user questions, just like a human.

Once it knows the issue, it will ask a few questions and place all the information it requires into a legally sound document, which can be sent directly to the local councils, airlines or banks, depending on what type of appeal is being generated, said Browder.

The website took three weeks to produce and Browder launched it initially for family and friends – in September 2015.

Since then over 152,000 people have used the website and 47% have had successful appeals.

Update: June 2016. Do Not Pay has now successfully challenged 160,000 out of 250,000 tickets
