Smith Wins Men�s Slalom At 58th Masters

U.S. water ski athlete Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) won the men�s slalom title for the third consecutive year and fourth time in his career at the 58th Masters Water Ski Tournament, presented by GM Marine Engine Technology, May 27-28, at Callaway Gardens’ Robin Lake in Pine Mountain, Ga. Smith, the lone U.S. athlete to win a title this year, needed a runoff against Great Britain�s Will Asher to secure the title. After both skiers tied with 3 buoys at 41 feet off in the finals, Smith won the subsequent runoff with a score of 4 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off to Asher�s 2-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off.

Baldwin, Canepa Win Junior Masters Titles

U.S. water ski athletes Brooke Baldwin (Windermere, Fla.) and Ryan Canepa (Elk Grove, Calif.) won respective titles on Friday at the 25th Nautique Junior Masters Water Ski Tournament at Callaway Gardens� Robin Lake in Pine Mountain, Ga.

NSSA (WI Region) Drivers� Clinics Scheduled

The Wisconsin Region of the National Show Ski Association will hold drivers’ clinics in June. Please verify with the respective contacts if you are attending. If you are planning to attend as a student, please make sure to bring some skiers who can help. We will need names of drivers planning to test at least a week prior. Anyone who is upgrading his or her rating, the clinic will count toward your continuing education credit.�

IWWF Approves Sedlmajer�s World Record

The International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation�s Tournament Council has approved the pending world overall record of 2,820.79 points set by Adam Sedlmajer (Czech Republic) at the 2017 Isles Spring Invitational on April 21 at the Isles of Lake Hancock in Winter Garden, Fla.

Midwest Region Wins Collegiate All-Stars

The National Collegiate Water Ski Association�s Midwest Region won the coveted team title for the fourth consecutive year at the 36th Collegiate All-Stars Water Ski Championships, May 20-21, at Bullneck Lake in Scott, Ark. Hosted by the Bullneck Lake Ski Club and the University of Alabama and University of Arkansas water ski teams, the two-day event included the top-10 men and top-10 women from each of the NCWSA’s four regions vying for the regional team title and individual titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

Gay, Zharnasek Set Pending World Records

U.S. athlete Anna Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Belarus� Aliaksei Zharnasek each set pending world tricks records on Saturday at the 2017 Sunset Cup and Masters Last Chance Qualifier at Jack Travers� International Tournament Skiing at Sunset Lakes in Groveland, Fla. Gay set a pending women�s world tricks record of 10,880 points, while Zharnasek set a pending men�s world tricks record of 12,610 points. Both athletes hold the current women�s and men�s world tricks records, respectively. The records were set behind the Ski Nautique 200.

AWSA Seeks Volunteer Programmers

The American Water Ski Association is seeking volunteer programmers to help maintain some key systems that run the organization’s tournament scores and rankings lists. The behind-the-scenes database platform is Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Smith, Jaquess Win Swiss Pro Slalom Titles

U.S. water ski athletes Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) and Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) won the men�s and women�s slalom titles, respectively, on Sunday at the 3rd annual Swiss Pro Slalom at the Swiss Ski School in Clermont, Fla. Smith set a pending world record of 3 buoys at 43 feet off in the finals to clinch the men�s title, while Jaquess, the only female to run the 39-1/2 off pass in the tournament � and she did it all three rounds � scored 1-1/2 buoys at 41 feet off in the finals to win the women�s title.

Rodgers Wins Nautique Big Dawg Stop No. 1

The first stop of the 2017 Nautique Big Dawg World Tour, presented by O�Brien, was held Saturday and Sunday at the Greater Miami Ski Club in Miami, Fla. with U.S. athlete Jeff Rodgers (Ninety Six, S.C.) winning the event. Rodgers and fellow U.S. athlete Ben Favret needed a runoff to settle the title. After both skiers tied with scores of 2 buoys at 41 feet off in the final, Rodgers scored 6 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off to Favret�s 3-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off in the subsequent runoff.

IWWF Hall To Induct Three U.S. Athletes

The International Water Ski & Wakeboard Federation has announced that Kristi Overton-Johnson, Kris LaPoint and Ron Scarpa, all current members of the USA Water Ski Foundation�s Water Ski Hall of Fame, will be inducted into the International Hall of Fame on Sept. 8 during the 2017 Water Ski World Championships in Choisy-Le-Roi near Paris, France. Greece�s Angeliki Andriopoulou will be the other inductee.

In Memoriam: Janelle Kirtley-Godfrey

Jane Ellen “Janelle” Kirtley-Godfrey, age 73, of Quinton, Ala. died peacefully at home on April 28, 2017. Janelle was born Dec. 8, 1943 in Birmingham to the late Robert H. Kirtley and the late Mary Leona Perry Kirtley. Under the guidance of her parents, Janelle became a skilled water skier, and began competing in water skiing tournaments in 1956. In 1959, at the age of 15, she competed with the U.S. Women’s National Water Ski team in Milan, Italy. She went on to win the overall competition in the Masters Water Ski Tournament in 1960. She won the women�s world slalom title in 1961, and the tricks and slalom titles in 1963. She also performed in ski shows at Cypress Gardens.

USA Water Ski has selected Connor Poggetto (Carmichael, Calif.) as its Male Athlete of the Month and Sarah Switzer (Madison, Ala.) as its Female Athlete of the Month for April. The U.S. Disabled Water Ski Team was selected Team of the Month. Poggetto, Switzer and the U.S. Disabled Water Ski Team are now eligible for the United States Olympic Committee�s Best of April Team USA Awards, presented by Dow.
